Fourstones Installs Greener Office Heating

As we all know, Scotland’s weather can be up and down. At our Sapphire Paper Mill, we have commissioned a new office heating system. It comes with several amazing benefits and will keep our offices warm, no matter the weather.

Efficient Hot Water Supply

It’s no secret that at Fourstones, we are committed to sustainability. However, manufacturing paper is an energy intensive process. To help reduce our energy consumption, we use a highly efficient CHP (combined heat and power) system that simultaneously generates electricity and heat. The electricity generated by the CHP system is used through our paper mill, lowering our reliance on external energy supplies.

The boilers we use in the paper making process generate a lot of heat, which is used by the CHP plant to create electricity via a generator. To keep the CHP system cool, a closed-loop heat extraction system uses water to draw heat away from the CHP’s components. This works just like the coolant system in a car. We use the hot water that is generated in a few ways. Some of the water is used in our pulper and boiler systems, and the rest is diverted into our office building. This supplies the existing central heating system to keep our staff warm – effectively providing free heating! What makes our CHP system so great is that we can heat our offices without using additional energy, which helps to lower our carbon footprint.

ISO 14064-1:2018 Carbon Reduction Reporting

Being ISO 14064-1:2018 certified, Fourstones demonstrates it has a third party verified carbon footprint recording system in place. This data helps to show us where we are doing well, and where we can improve in lowering our carbon footprint. Utilising the excess heat from our CHP system is one of many ways in which we are lowering our carbon footprint to work towards achieving our carbon reductions goals.

Hydrogen Ready

What’s more, our CHP engine is hydrogen ready. With the only by-products of burning hydrogen being water vapour, hydrogen can provide much cleaner energy than the likes of natural gas. Being hydrogen ready demonstrates our commitment towards investing in cleaner energy in the future and that we are ready to embrace new technologies. Ultimately, these developments will help us to reduce our carbon footprint sooner, both now and moving forward.

Commitment to Sustainability

Our newly commissioned office heating system is just one of the many ways in which we are working towards reducing our carbon footprint. Everyone at Fourstones understands the importance of looking after the environment, which is why we as a whole are dedicated to greater sustainability.
