What is a Food Contact Material?
A Food Contact Material is a product that is safe to be in contact with food, common cleaning sprays, utensils, packaging and even paper products like centrefeed can be food safe. In food preparation areas, it is essential to prevent contaminants from coming into contact with food, to ensure it is still safe to consume. Food Safe Materials use safer chemicals and materials to minimise contamination risk, making them safe to wipe surfaces and store food without altering taste or scent.
Dangers of Non-Food Safe Paper
Using a paper product that isn’t certified as a Food Safe Material can have dangerous consequences. Certain paper products are made using chemicals that may not be safe for human consumption.
Many low-cost paper options may contain unsafe chemicals that ‘bleed’/’Leach’ heavily when they come into contact with a liquid. This can potentially lead to contamination of nearby food and drink, which may cause adverse health effects.
Additionally, the material used within some paper may contain unsafe fibres from irresponsible sources. When ingested or used in food preparation, these materials may have adverse effects.
By not using food-safe material, end users are at risk of breaching food safety laws such as HACCP systems, the UK’s food safety act – this could result in health risks for customers, fines and damaged reputation.
