Fourstones Latest Paper Machine Operational

The Future of UK Paper Making

We are proud to announce that our brand-new PM6 paper machine is finished and operational! PM6 is a new UK paper machine, built at our Sapphire Mill site in Scotland. This follows months of dedication, from planning and construction to safety measures and testing. Thanks to everyone’s hard work and commitment, we’ve successfully reached the finish line. As an established UK paper supplier, we manufacture high-quality paper hygiene products using our own UK made paper.

High-Quality Paper

The purpose of PM6 is to manufacture high-quality tissue paper parent reels for the UK paper converting market. This new machine also strengthens the resilience of our finished goods operations by improving the resilience and integration of our internal supply chain.

PM6 will enable shorter lead times for UK converters while ensuring consistent quality and reliability in every roll we produce. By providing a strong domestic alternative to imported paper, PM6 supports the reduction of transport-related carbon emissions per tonne and contributes to the sector’s wider sustainability goals.

Increased Production Capacity

PM6 is equipped with advanced technology, including a Crescent Former, a fabricated steel Yankee cylinder, and a high-temperature drying hood. With a trimmed width of 2.75 m and an operating speed of 1,700 m/min, PM6 has been designed to combine high capacity with consistent, high-quality output.

The completion of PM6 is set to double our production capacity at our Sapphire Mill site to an impressive 64,000+ tonnes annually, allowing us to meet the growing demand for our products.

Creating Local Jobs

Our new UK paper machine will not only create paper, but it has also resulted in the creation of over 25 full-time jobs at our Sapphire Mill site in Scotland.  Ranging from Manufacturing Operatives to Engineers, these new roles will be essential in maintaining PM6 and helping to run the machine at maximum efficiency, whilst helping to boost the local economy.

Standout Engineering

We recently had a chat with our Project Engineer, Francis Price, about his crucial role in the build and commissioning of our brand new PM6 paper machine. From the laying of foundations, to specifying machine components and coordinating the delivery of the drying cylinder, Francis was involved in every part of PM6.

Health and Safety

Our brand-new PM6 paper machine is now operational and our Health and Safety Manager, Scott, has been busy making sure all appropriate measures are in place. From ensuring that protective barriers are secured safely, to displaying clear signage and beyond, making a new machine and its surroundings safe is no small task. Scott also had to complete a range of health and safety assessments in order to sign off the new machine.

Project Delivery

In this interview, our PM6 Project Team, Natasha and Gary, give us an in-depth perspective on the build of PM6. Their task was to ensure the smooth delivery and completion of the new paper machine from start to finish. They share fascinating insights about their key responsibilities such as the sourcing of components, risk management and project planning.

Throughout the build, and having faced several challenges to overcome, Natasha and Gary remained level-headed and focussed on completing the machine safely and efficiently.

More to Come

Our new paper machine is just one of the investments we’re making in 2025. At Fourstones, we are always looking for new ways to improve our products and services, so make sure you stay tuned on our social channels and website news section for all of the latest updates.
