GSM Explained
Understanding how GSM dictates performance is key to keeping a workshop running smoothly:
- Low GSM means there is less material per sheet, making it less durable and less absorbent. Low GSM is ideal for quick clean ups and hand drying. However, if the GSM is too low, you may find the paper no longer performs how you need it to when dealing with industrial grime.
- High GSM means more material per sheet, increasing the absorbency properties, whilst also providing a stronger sheet. High GSM paper is ideal for demanding environments that require a robust and durable sheet when used with oils and chemicals.
Fibre Length Matters
The length of fibres can also affect how a sheet performs. For example, longer fibres can provide a stronger sheet, however a low GSM sheet with these longer fibres can result in a lot less absorbency, which in turn will affect the end user’s experience with the product.
This is due to the long fibres forming tight, highly bonded, flat networks to hold the thin sheet together. Because they bond so closely, they collapse the “bulk” (the thickness or loft of the sheet). Without bulk, there are no microscopic air pockets (voids) between the fibres to trap water via capillary action.
This is why it is important to use a quality paper designed not only for strength but also absorbency and durability, to ensure all heavy-duty environments such as automotive and agricultural can reliably use each roll.

Instead of relying on a single, heavy layer, the three individual ply distribute physical stress and wet tensile loads across three independent fibre networks. This layered structure reduces the likelihood of sheets breaking down and significantly increases the absorbency of each sheet, rapidly drawing in fluid and ensuring the paper maintains its structural integrity even when fully saturated.
